Getting Around Bali

Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS) is located in southern Bali, approximately 16 kilometres from the capital city, Denpasar. Numerous international carriers service Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport either directly or via Jakarta.

For those looking to hire a car on arrival in Bali, there are four car rental companies represented at Ngurah Rai Airport. These are Toyota Rent-a-Car, Hertz, Blue Bird and KoperasiTaxi. Transport from Ngurah Rai International Airport, 2.5 kilometres south of Kuta is quite simple. Choose from an official taxi counter, where you pay a set price in advance or walk across the airport car park and hail a metered cab.

Another option is to get a taxi from the airport to Bemo Corner in Kuta for a fixed rate and then get a metered taxi or a chartered bemo (minibus) to a more distant destination - this should save a few thousand Rupiah. You can also walk straight up the road to Kuta, although it's a more pleasant stroll along the beach. The main forms of public transport in Bali are the cheap buses and bemos (covered pickups or mini-vans) that run on more or less set routes within or between towns. Public buses ply routes throughout Baii from Denpasar's Ubung Terminal. Bemos ply short routes between towns. For a different experience, hop on a traditional dokar (small horse-drawn carts), available in Kuta and Denpasar that cost next to nothing.

While inexpensive public transportation is available throughout Bali, the best option for travellers looking for comfort and flexibility is car rental. Air-conditioned vehicles available include jeeps, family wagons and sedans, and these may be hired with or without a chauffeur. If you choose to drive yourself, a valid international driving license is required. Temporary driving permits arc available from he Traffic Police Department. Touring Bali by a motorcycle is a romantic and carefree option provided you drive very cautiously. Bali is connected to Java by a regular ferry service running between Cilimanuk and Banyuwangi. If you are taking the train or a night bus from Jakarta, Bandung or Yogyakarta, travel first to Surabaya for the connection to Banyuwangi. Buses can be boarded at Banyuwangi or Gilimanuk for the final leg to Denpasar.
